Adult Learners’ Week 2012 – nominations for inspirational learners open now!

You can now nominate the people in Yorkshire and the Humber who most inspire and encourage others by their dedication to their Adult Learners' Week 2012 logo learning journey. Involve Yorkshire & Humber is running a fantastic Adult Learners’ Week competition, for the third year in a row, culminating in a gala meal and celebration in Adult Learners’ Week itself, May 12-18 2012.

There are also awards for learning projects and some special categories of award:

  • Learning through craft award

  • Senior learner award

  • Young adult learner of the year award

  • Digital participation award

  • Apprentice of the year

Nominations of remarkable stories will come in from colleges, workplaces, prisons, and trades unions, as well as from voluntary and community organisations, and from all over the region. We were truly inspired by some of the people who were nominated last year.

If you would like to nominate someone special for an award, please go to the 'Nominate for an award' section of the Adult Learners Week website, or contact Amanda Vickers, (Regional Co-ordinator for Adult Learners’ Week at Involve Yorkshire & Humber)

The closing date for nominations is January 27th 2012

Adult Learners’ Week supports voluntary and community organisations that deliver learning, often to extremely disadvantaged groups of learners. (11% of all voluntary and community organisations are involved in such work). These adults missed out on the benefits of education the first time around, and have often striven against the odds to achieve. Adult Learners’ Week celebrates the amazing efforts of the learners themselves.

Involve Yorkshire & Humber also encourages organisations to run learning taster events in the region. These can be anything from workshops about dry stone walling to university taster events, and everything in between. We will be holding a workshop in the Spring, to encourage organisations to think of innovative ways to attract new adult learners.

At the celebration event in May all the award winners will be presented with certificates of achievement, and each of their stories will feature in a brochure. There is usually a local celebrity to hand out the awards.

Adult Learners’ Week is a big undertaking for Involve Yorkshire & Humber staff, but it’s so rewarding to meet the people behind such inspiring stories.

Involve Yorkshire & Humber coordinates Adult Learners’ Week in the region. Adult Learners’ Week is the UK’s largest annual festival of learning. Nationally, it’s coordinated by NIACE (the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education).
