Older people in Leeds speak directly to minister about social care

A group of older people in Leeds met Health Minister Norman Lamb MP yesterday (20.03.13) to tell him what they thought of the Government’s social care proposals.

The meeting was organised by charities the Leeds Older People’s Forum, Involve Yorkshire & Humber and Regional Voices to support older people to have a voice over an issue that could affect them.

Under discussion were two key proposals from the Government. Firstly that there will be a cap of £75,000 on the cost any individual will have to pay towards social care, the help older or disabled people need with tasks such as washing or preparing meals. Secondly, that anyone with less than £123,000, including the value of their house, will not have to pay the full cost of care.

Bev Taylor, Project Officer, at Regional Voices, said: "We were really pleased to be able to bring older people who may be directly affected by these reforms face-to-face with a minister responsible for them. It is vital that the views of older people all over the country are taken into account on this difficult issue of how to fund social care bills in the future."
