      71-410: Roman Empire

   500-850:  Kingdom of Northumbria

          954:  Kingdom of England

         1069: Harrying of the North 

1290-1832: parliamentary constituency

1455-1487: War of the Roses

    1642-51: English Civil Wars

         1832: Yorkshire parliamentary constituency divided into three

         1994: Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber created
