Celebrating Adult Learners Week

Emma Booth

Regional award winner

Emma’s post as a tenant liaison officer for Kirklees Council was made redundant in 2008. Emma took the chance to ask her employer to support her to train as an electrician. To her surprise they agreed, and Emma is currently attending Bradford College in the final year of a four year Apprentice Electrician programme, which she will complete in two and a half years.

Her nominator, who is her electrical lecturer and tutor, says 'Emma throughout her studies has been fast-tracked on all the electro technical aspects of the programme, achieving very good grades in assessments. Her resolute motivation, dedication and her willingness to study at both college and home, as well as activities promoting women in construction to local schools, have all led to her being nominated for this award'.

Emma is a single parent and role model for her 10 year old son. She says of her career change 'to reach for aspirations it takes hard work and determination, however, anything is achievable and it can also be lots of fun.'

Yorkshire & Humber Adult Learners' Week is coordinated by Involve Yorkshire & Humber. Adult Learners' Week Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-changing learning done by people in communities all over Yorkshire and Humber, and the central role of the voluntary and community sector in supporting learning.
