Celebrating Adult Learners Week

John Everard

Regional award winner

John broke a five year cycle of inactivity and depression by testing the waters of adult education at Northern College in Barnsley in January 2010. John Everard

His first course was a Level 2 ‘Navigation Skills for Walkers’ class. He felt an affinity with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the College and attended a series of short courses before successfully applying to study on the full time Access to Higher Education Diploma Programme in September 2010.

John says 'I immediately realised that this was the place I needed to be in order to move forward in my life once again'. He began to lay down an educational foundation that had been missing. John was elected as President of the Student Union, and is a student representative on the Board of Governors.

His nominator says that John 'skilfully encourages the less confident members of the class to participate in debates and discussions.' Recently, John was offered a place at the University of Derby in Buxton to study for a degree in Events Management.

Yorkshire & Humber Adult Learners' Week is coordinated by Involve Yorkshire & Humber. Adult Learners' Week Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-changing learning done by people in communities all over Yorkshire and Humber, and the central role of the voluntary and community sector in supporting learning.
